Film Music Supervisor
Song selection, licensing, and delivery for studio and independent features.
The job
From first cut to final mix
In a feature, a single song can anchor a scene, a trailer, and a soundtrack. Chris is involved from the earliest creative conversations, working with directors and producers to establish the musical language of the film, then clearing every song for the release the film is actually going to have.
His film work spans studio releases and independent features, including Jordan Peele's Get Out, Antebellum, and Jason Bateman's Bad Words.
Scope
What Chris handles on a feature
- Creative song selection, temp music, and spotting sessions with the director and editor
- Sync and master negotiation for every licensed song
- Festival, limited, and all-media license structures that fit the release plan
- Multi-territory, streaming, and theatrical distribution rights
- Playback and on-set music coordination for performance scenes
- Collaboration with the composer, music editor, and mixers
- Cue sheets and delivery to distributor specifications
Many films also need music for their trailers and marketing, which is licensed separately. See advertising and trailer music supervision.
